It's easier than you may think to beat the standard adult or concession ticket price.

In April, The West Australian reported that the average price of a movie ticket in Perth was $20. Today, a standard adult ticket at Event Cinemas Innaloo and Hoyts Carousel costs $21. That $21 doesn’t include the online booking fee, nor is it for an “Extreme Screen” or 3D session.

I think we can all do better than that. I haven’t had to pay full price for a movie ticket since mid-2015, and with this guide, neither will you.

Telstra and Optus

If you’re with Australia’s two largest telecommunications providers, you can get a pretty decent discount on going to the movies.

If you’re a Telstra customer, a standard Event Cinemas ticket through Telstra Thanks costs $12.50, a 3D ticket costs $15.50, and $16.50 for Vmax. These tickets aren’t valid on Saturdays after 5pm or on public holidays, and they don’t include Bollywood films.

This is up from $11 for a standard ticket in 2015.

If you’re an Optus customer, a standard Hoyts ticket through Optus Perks costs $11, $8.50 for kids under 15. Although the website states that surcharges apply to 3D and Xtreme Screen, the website doesn’t clearly outline what those surcharges are. LUX tickets cost $25, but they also attract a $3 online booking fee. None of these tickets is valid after 5pm on Saturdays.

The price of a standard Hoyts ticket through Optus is up from $10 in 2015.

RAC

RAC member benefits

If you go to the cinema frequently like I do, you can save more in a year than you pay in membership fees.

RAC WA offers its members discounts on tickets at the two major cinema chains as well as some of the smaller players like Grand, Ace, Palace and Reading. RAC Rewards Membership — which includes member discounts but no roadside assistance — costs $29 per year.

I’m going to go through each of the ticket types on sale through the RAC. Bear in mind that they have increased in the past and they will likely do so again in the future.

All tickets purchased through the RAC Online Shop attract a 2% credit and debit card surcharge.

If you live outside of WA, don’t fret. Each state has their own equivalent to the RAC, and to the best of my knowledge, they all offer discounted movie tickets, albeit with different pricing models.

Cinebuzz Students (Event Cinemas)

If you’re a student, Event Cinemas offers the Cinebuzz Students card, which entitles you to $10 standard movie tickets on Monday-Thursday. You also get a handful of other benefits like advance screenings and the ability to earn points based on the number of films you see.

Private health insurance

Some private health insurers like HBF and Bupa offer discounted movie tickets. To the best of my knowledge there isn’t a comprehensive list of insurers that provide discounted movie tickets, so you’ll have to shop around yourself.

Cheap Tuesday

Tuesday is the day to go to the cinema if you’re keen to save some cash. At the time of publication, Event Cinemas Innaloo and Hoyts Carousel charge $13 for standard adult tickets on Tuesdays.

Reading Cinemas

Reading Cinemas in Belmont charges $10 for a standard adult movie ticket, making it the cheapest cinema in Perth.
